Good-bye to 2017!! May 2018 be rich in evidence- & science-based happenings!

$$$$ 2017 will be remembered for a record which could hold for years: our single largest order ever, $250K! This CLARiTY 1000 includes stopped-flow, spectroelectrochemistry, oxygen concentration readings,  rapid-scanning fluorescence, “and other concomitant measurements on respiratory electron transfer reactions in intact bacteria [that oxidize and degrade selected solid particles]. Congratulations to Prof Robert C. Blake, II, for the three ground-breaking publications achieved with his first CLARiTY 1000 and for the novel work which this second system will support.

The grant funding this purchase New Instrumentation and Means to Study the Mechanisms and Pathways for Energy Generation in Microorganisms was awarded by the Army Research Office and is the latest in an uninterrupted stream of funding from U.S. DOE, DOD, NIH, and EPA which Blake has received during a 33 year stretch.

Blakes relentless drive for better science and tools to drive it found its partner in my dad, Dr. Richard J. De Sa. Together, these men (interestingly, both biochemistry doctorates from UIUC, but 14 years apart) have advanced the OLIS product line while equipping Blake with first-of-their-kind instruments for 33 years. Dr. Blakes laboratory is the OLIS catalog in 3D, containing the first OLIS RSM 1000 rapid-scanning stopped-flow, the first CLARiTY 1000, an OLIS modernized Cary 14, OLIS DSM 20 CD, OLIS DM 45 fluorimeter, and more. Congratulations and thank you, Bob!

$$$ Coming into its own in 2017 was the CLARiTY VF, an exquisitely sensitive absorbance and fluorescence spectrometer priced like a quality research UV/Vis ($50K) but offering so much more. Models are optimized by application: algae pump-probeprotein UVelectron transport chain (visible), and more. This year, we added the option of using a normal 1 cm2 cuvette within a CLARiTY, expanding measurements even further.

$$  Since the 1980s, we have upcycled HP 8452 diode arrays. Now, we also have software for the  HP/ Agilent 8453. There is no downside to upcycling an excellent HP/ Agilent UV/Vis 8452 or 8453 with OlisWorks software.

$  Sometimes, a single datum at a single wavelength is sufficient. Take the color of beer, for instance. Monitoring at 430 nm is sufficient to ensure that your IPA doesnt look like their lager. As with all CLARiTY models, scatter does not matter to these individual-wavelength CLARiTYs, so costly and tedious sample clarification is eliminated. The iC430 will be joined by the iC520, iC 620, and others during early 2018.

Free!  I am writing a book about my father and his company with practical teachings on spectroscopy and kinetics throughout. If you have a memory for me to include, or suggestions of topics or components to highlight, please share. Dad celebrates his 80th on August 4, 2018 and I plan to be finished with There is No Magic by then. Let me know if you would like a copy; for clients & friends, there wont be a cost.

I maintain a LinkedIn profile and a company Facebook page. Usually, once or twice a month, I post something I believe will interest our clients and friends. I would love it if you contributed to these posts. And, if you have ideas about a user forum, we would be 100% supportive.
